Craig Cerrig-gleisiad

The walk up Craig Cerrig-gleisiad isn't quite the epic you might think from the map. It's a modest peak near Brecon, but what it lacks in stature it makes up for in views across the Brecon Beacons - on a clear day you're looking at proper ridge country stretching away in all directions.

This is walker territory, full stop. The approach is straightforward enough if you're reasonably fit, taking a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace and which route you take. There's no summit cairn that'll make you feel like you've conquered anything, but that's rather the point. You get the landscape without the crowds you'd find on Pen y Fan.

Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the distance. Bring decent boots - the ground gets boggy after rain and you'll want proper grip.

Free to visit, naturally, and there's parking nearby to get you started. Spring and autumn are your best bets weatherwise, though summer works too if you don't mind the crowds at the weekend.

If you're basing yourself at one of the glamping spots nearby - Toad & Snail is just over four miles away, or there's Aber Glamping even closer to the park itself - this makes a cracking morning or afternoon outing. It's the sort of walk you do between proper hikes rather than an all-day mission, which suits the Beacons well. Pair it with a visit to nearby parks and you've got a solid Mid Wales break sorted.
