Craigownie Castle

The ruins of Craigownie Castle sit on a peninsula jutting into the Firth of Clyde, a few miles south of Helensburgh. What remains is mostly foundation and wall fragments - don't expect a three-storey tower or anything you can walk around inside. This is archaeology, not architecture, though the setting makes it worth the detour if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Rosneath Castle or Hunters Quay Holiday Village.

The castle dates back centuries but has been left to the elements for so long that only serious ruin enthusiasts will find it absorbing for more than twenty minutes. Access can be tricky - you'll need to pick your way across overgrown ground and work out the right of way, which isn't always obvious. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation, and no facilities. Bring proper footwear because the terrain is boggy in places.

It's the sort of place where locals know to come, not tourists. If you're walking the Clyde coastal paths from Glenfinart Caravan Park or Stratheck Holiday Park, or you're genuinely interested in medieval Scottish fortifications, then yes, go. Otherwise, the ruins alone won't hold most people's attention. The real draw is the shoreline views and the quiet - you won't be jostling with crowds. Check with Helensburgh's visitor centre before you set out, as access conditions and ownership details aren't well publicised.
