Craster Memorial Harbour

The harbour at Craster is properly atmospheric - a working fishing village that hasn't been sanitised for tourists, which is exactly why it's worth stopping by. You're looking at a Victorian stone pier built in 1906, still lined with traditional fishing boats and the odd crab pot, with locals actually going about their business rather than performing it for visitors.

What draws people here is straightforward: the golden-hour light bouncing off the water, a decent walk along the coastline towards Dunstanburgh Castle, and the chance to grab fresh crab or kippers from one of the fish shacks. You can park and wander round the working harbour in thirty minutes, or make it a proper two-hour outing if you're heading north along the cliff path. There's no visitor centre or admission fee - it's free and unvarnished.

Historically minded folk appreciate the local fishing heritage. Families with young kids will find it interesting for twenty minutes, then get a bit restless unless the crab-spotting in the shallows grabs them. Walkers absolutely should incorporate this into a longer coastal hike - the stretch towards the castle is cracking.

Stay at one of the nearby caravan sites - Proctors Stead is closest at less than a mile - and use Craster as a base for exploring the wider Northumberland coast. It's the sort of place that reminds you why seaside villages existed in the first place, before the full tourist apparatus moved in. Go on a weekday if you can.
