Craven's Motorcycle Museum

The collection sits just outside York and is genuinely impressive if you're into motorcycles - and I mean actually into them, not just vaguely interested. Walking through, you're surrounded by restored bikes spanning decades: British classics, racing machines, oddities you've never heard of. The detail on some of these is extraordinary - paintwork so perfect it looks wet, engines so clean you could eat off them.

It's the kind of place where time dissolves. Spent three hours here when I'd planned on ninety minutes. Enthusiasts will lose themselves completely, but casual visitors might find their attention wavering after an hour or so. There's not much beyond the bikes themselves - no interactive elements, no simulator, just you and the machines.

Not a natural fit for young kids unless they've inherited a parent's passion for engines. Teenagers who are into bikes? They'll want to stay all day. Couples where one person rides and the other doesn't? Prepare for an uneven experience.

York itself is fifteen minutes' drive, so you could easily slot this into a broader day. Wagtail Park is closest if you're camping nearby - just a mile away - and Flaxton Meadows offers a solid alternative if Wagtail's full. Fox Hill, slightly further out, is consistently rated highly if you want something more upmarket.

Worth the trip if bikes genuinely appeal to you. Otherwise, you'll be bored within an hour.
