Crazy Golf

There's a nine-hole crazy golf course just outside Great Yarmouth that does exactly what it says on the tin - you hit a ball round some daft obstacles and try not to get annoyed when it goes up a ramp backwards. It's the sort of thing that takes about forty minutes to an hour, depending on how many times you lose your ball in the windmill or behind a plastic castle.

This is proper family fodder. Young kids find it hilarious, teenagers pretend they're bored but actually competitive as hell, and parents get five minutes of peace while everyone concentrates. You won't need any special equipment - just turn up with shoes that aren't flip-flops and a sense of humour about your golf swing (or lack thereof).

The location is genuinely handy if you're staying at Haven Caister-on-Sea Holiday Park, which is practically on your doorstep at just a ten-minute walk. Even from California Cliffs or Haven Seashore, you're only talking twenty minutes maximum. It's the sort of thing you'd lump in with a beach morning and an ice cream run - not a reason to visit Norfolk on its own, but a solid way to fill a couple of hours when the weather's behaving.

Bring some loose change and a bit of patience. It's not going to win any design awards, but if you've got kids getting restless on a family holiday, it does the job without breaking the bank or requiring you to drive anywhere complicated.
