Creag Mhigeachaidh

The walk up Creag Mhigeachaidh isn't going to break you, but it's proper steep in places and the views from the top make the huffing worthwhile. This isn't a Cairngorm monster - it's more of a mid-range Scottish peak that sits well above Aviemore, offering genuine Highland scenery without needing a full day's graft.

You're looking at roughly two to three hours for the round trip from the car park, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the summit. The path climbs through pine forest before opening out into moorland, and on a clear day the panorama across the Cairngorms is genuinely excellent. On a grey one, you'll disappear into cloud and see about fifty metres in any direction - Scottish mountains do that.

This suits walkers wanting something a touch more ambitious than a riverside stroll but not quite ready for Ben Nevis territory. Families with older kids who've done a few hills will manage it fine. Leave before midday in winter months, though - darkness comes fast up here.

If you're based at Dalraddy Holiday Park, just a handful of miles away, this makes a cracking day out from the caravan or lodge. The park gives you access to the whole Aviemore area without needing to be in the town proper. It's free to walk, naturally, and there's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit - just mountain.
