Creag nam Brataincnean

The walk up Creag nam Brataincnean isn't long, but it's steep enough to earn your view properly. Starting from near Blairgowrie, you're climbing a Perthshire peak that sits at 730 metres - nothing extreme, but the gradient means you'll feel it in your legs by the top.

What you get for the effort is a proper 360-degree panorama. On a clear day - and you'll need one - the Cairngorms roll away to the north and the glens open up below. The peak itself is bare and windswept, which means no shelter when the weather turns, but also no trees obscuring the view. You're looking at forty minutes up, perhaps half an hour down, so allow ninety minutes comfortably with a breather at the summit.

This suits hill walkers who want real distance without needing a full day out. It's too exposed and the path too rough for very young children, though teenagers with some walking experience will manage fine. Solo walkers appreciate the solitude here - you won't be jostling with crowds.

Spring and autumn are best - summer midges can be brutal, and winter snow makes the steep bits genuinely risky without proper kit. The path becomes a stream in heavy rain, so check conditions first.
