Creepy Hollow

The old quarry workings at Creepy Hollow, just outside Wotton-under-Edge, live up to their name in the gloomiest of ways. Sheer stone faces rise up from an abandoned pit, with skeletal trees clinging to the edges and hardly any light reaching the bottom. It's genuinely unsettling - the sort of place where you understand why locals have stamped it with a name like that.

You can walk around the rim and peer down into the depths, which feels properly eerie even on a bright day. There's something about the scale of the old digging that gets under your skin: how much stone was torn out of this hillside, and for what. The wound in the landscape is still visible.

History types will find it interesting - a raw example of Victorian-era quarrying that shaped the region's industry. Families with younger kids might find it a bit bleak after ten minutes; teenagers who like the slightly creepy side of British history will get more from it. Walkers treating it as a detour loop from nearby trails should allow an hour, though you could cover it in half that.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I can find, so it's free and entirely self-directed. Combine it with a stay at Wixoldbury Farm Glamping just down the road - the contrast between that peaceful spot and this industrial scar is actually quite striking. Go when the light's low and the mist's hanging about. That's when Creepy Hollow properly earns its name.
