Crestland Wood

A proper woodland walk through Essex countryside, Crestland Wood offers the kind of quiet you don't get near the coast. Ancient oaks and thick underbrush give it a more serious feel than your typical park stroll - this is genuine forest, not manicured greenery. The paths wind through dense woodland where the light filters down in dappled patches, and in spring the whole place comes alive with birdsong.

It's best for walkers who actually want to walk rather than just potter about for twenty minutes. Kids can run off steam here without being hemmed in by fence lines, though you'll want them old enough not to vanish into the trees. The forest floor gets muddy after rain - bring proper boots, not trainers. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I can find, so come prepared.

Location-wise, you're well-positioned if you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Lee Wick Farm Cottages is closest at under five miles, and West Mersea Holiday Park a short drive further. The woodland makes a good counterpoint to all the beach time you'd be doing otherwise. An hour or two here breaks up a coastal holiday nicely without being a major expedition. It's free to access and there's no obvious entrance fee, though you'll need to know roughly where you're going. Not Instagram-famous or crowded. Just proper Essex woodland that does exactly what it says on the tin.
