Crifton Coppice

You'll need to head south of Shrewsbury to find this woodland, and honestly, it's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick car-park dash. Crifton Coppice is a working woodland - coppiced for centuries, which means the trees have been cut and left to regrow naturally, creating that lovely dense understory and a real sense of age. The paths are decent enough underfoot, though muddy patches are inevitable. In spring the ground flora explodes; autumn's when the light cuts through best.

Walkers will get proper value here. It's not dramatic - you won't find fell views or dramatic drops - but it's proper woodland walking, the kind where you notice the texture of bark and the way light filters through. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough; keen walkers easily stretch to two. Dog owners love it, and it's genuinely peaceful even on weekends. The coppicing work you'll spot (fallen logs, regenerating growth) adds interest beyond just "nice trees."
