Crochan Llanddwyn

The walk out to Crochan on Llanddwyn Island is proper rewarding. You're heading across a tidal causeway toward this rocky outcrop where the lighthouse stands - it's one of those places that changes completely depending on whether the tide's in or out. Low tide means you can walk most of the way across sand and shale. High tide and you're picking your way along a narrower path with water on both sides. The reserve itself is quiet, windswept stuff. Seabirds nest here, so spring and early summer are when you'll see the most life, though it's never going to feel crowded.

The rock formations around Crochan are the main draw - all those layered slates and mudstones that geologists get excited about. The views back toward Anglesey and across Caernarfon Bay are decent too, especially on a clear day. Most people allow two to three hours for the whole thing, depending on tide times and how far out you fancy going.

It's the sort of place walkers and nature enthusiasts will appreciate far more than families with young kids. Terrain can be uneven and slippery, particularly after rain. There's no visitor centre or facilities on the island itself, so come prepared.

If you're based at one of the local parks - Llanfair Hall sits just 2.7 miles away, with Anglesey Holiday Pods and Coed Helen even closer - this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing.
