Cronker Plantation

Walking into Cronker Plantation near Bury feels like stepping away from the Lancastrian towns altogether. This is proper woodland - dense enough that you lose the sound of traffic within minutes, with a network of paths threading through mature trees that actually make you feel like you've gone somewhere. The forest floor is soft underfoot, especially after rain, and in spring the place comes alive with bluebells.

It's the sort of place where families with young kids will spend a contented hour or two without anyone getting fractious. The paths are manageable for pushchairs on drier days, though after wet weather you're better off in wellies. Older children who like climbing and exploring fallen logs will find plenty to keep them occupied. If you're after serious hill walking though, this isn't it - it's gentle terrain, easy to navigate.

For walkers based at Rossendale Holiday Cottages & Glamping just down the road, Cronker sits nicely as a morning or afternoon mission. You can do a circuit in 45 minutes or take it slowly and absorb it. There's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre, no cafe, no charge that I could find - just trees and paths and the genuine quiet you're after when you've rented somewhere in the countryside.

Come midweek outside school holidays if you want it to yourself. Weekends pull in locals from Bury who know what they're doing.
