Crook Hill

Standing barely 50 metres above the Fleet Lagoon, this gentle grassy rise hardly qualifies as a proper hill by most standards. Yet the views from Crook Hill's modest summit pack a proper punch - the entire sweep of Chesil Beach stretches out below like a ruler's edge, with Portland Bill jutting into the Channel beyond. It's a five-minute scramble from the Rodden Hive car park, making it one of the easiest viewpoints along this stretch of the Jurassic Coast.

Families with young children will find this spot perfect for a quick leg-stretch during a beach day. The walk up is gentle enough for pushchairs on the main path, though the final approach to the summit gets a bit rougher underfoot. Photographers love the elevated perspective over the Fleet and its famous pebble barrier, particularly at sunrise when the light catches the water.

Timing matters here. Visit during high tide for the most dramatic contrast between lagoon and sea, or come at low tide to spot the wading birds that feed in the shallows. The hill sits right between East Fleet Farm and Haven Littlesea holiday parks, so it's handy for a quick evening walk from your caravan. Allow thirty minutes tops unless you're planning a picnic at the top - there's not much shelter when the wind picks up off the water.
