Crook's Wood

Walk into Crook's Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - tall beeches, oaks, and plenty of undergrowth that makes you feel genuinely away from it all, despite being just outside Amersham. The forest floor is soft with leaf litter, the kind of place where the light filters through in dappled patches and you'll hear more birdsong than traffic.

It's straightforward woodland walking rather than anything dramatically scenic. There are paths threading through, though they're not always obvious or particularly well-marked, which means you need a bit of navigation sense or willingness to get a bit lost. That said, there's something rather good about that - you're genuinely exploring rather than following a tourist trail.

Families with older kids who like getting into nature will find plenty to do here. Little ones might get restless without a specific destination or playground, so it's better suited to 8+ who can appreciate a proper ramble. Allow a couple of hours to make it worthwhile rather than a quick half-hour jaunt.

If you're based at Bella Vista Camping or Home Farm Camping nearby, this works well as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's free and open access, which is the only way to do woodland really. Best visited when it's not been raining for days - the paths get properly boggy otherwise. Spring and autumn are cracking, when you've got bluebells or golden light through the leaves.
