Cruach an Fhreacadain

The walk up Cruach an Fhreacadain is one of those Scottish hill routes that rewards effort without demanding mountaineer credentials. Starting from near Tarbert on the Kintyre Peninsula, you're looking at a proper climb but nothing that'll have you scrambling or needing ropes. The peak itself sits at around 700 metres, and on a clear day the views down Loch Fyne and across to Cowal are genuinely spectacular.

It's a solid three to four hour round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The paths are reasonably well-trodden, though muddy sections crop up even when the weather's been decent. Come in spring or autumn if you can - summer brings the midges out in force, and winter requires proper navigation skills if the cloud rolls in.

Walkers will find this straightforward enough; families with older kids can manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the gradient. History buffs won't find much up there beyond the view, but that's rather the point. This is about the walking and the landscape, not ruins or signposted heritage.

It pairs nicely with a few days based around Tarbert. Port Ban Holiday Park is just 2.6 miles away and offers decent facilities, or Tarbert Holiday Park gives you a bit more choice if the first is full. Both put you within striking distance of decent walks across Argyll - Cruach an Fhreacadain is really just the start. Frankly, if you're in the area anyway, the detour makes sense. The climb itself is straightforward enough that you can do it casually between other activities.
