Cruach Brenfield

The walk up Cruach Brenfield isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the views. You're looking at roughly 45 minutes to the summit from Lochgilphead, and the effort pays off - on a clear day you can see right across towards the Cowal peninsula and down Loch Fyne. The peak itself is fairly exposed moorland, so bring a windproof even when it's calm lower down.

It's the sort of walk that suits anyone with decent fitness - not a technical scramble, just a proper slog uphill through rough terrain. Kids who like climbing things will get a kick out of it; those after a gentle stroll will find it a bit much. The path isn't always obvious, so you'll need a decent map or a GPS app, and it's worth doing on a day when the weather's settled. Come too early in the year and it can be boggy.

There's no visitor centre or facilities on the mountain itself - bring water and something to eat if you're making an afternoon of it. The whole excursion, including a steady descent, takes about two hours. If you're staying at Lochgilphead Caravan Park or The Pod Over By nearby, this makes a solid morning's activity before heading elsewhere. It won't take up your whole day, which means you can combine it with exploring the wider area around Argyll. Worth the detour if you're a walker; not worth planning a trip around otherwise.
