Cruachan Dam Visitor Centre

Scotland's only hydroelectric visitor centre sits tucked beside Loch Awe near Taynuilt, and it's genuinely fascinating if you're interested in how the Highlands generate power. The Cruachan Dam itself is a proper feat of engineering - a pumped storage facility hidden inside Ben Cruachan that you can actually tour by going deep into the mountain itself.

The visitor centre walks you through the technical side with exhibits on renewable energy and the history of the dam's construction in the 1960s. Real highlight is the underground tour, which descends into the turbine hall carved into the rock. It's cool in every sense - literally a few degrees cooler in there, and genuinely impressive to stand inside a mountain watching the machinery that powers homes across Scotland. Kids usually get a kick out of it, though younger ones might find the descent a bit daunting if they're not keen on enclosed spaces.

Allowing two to three hours total gives you time to see the visitor centre properly and do the underground section without rushing. The setting itself is lovely - Loch Awe is one of Scotland's largest lochs, and the surrounding hills make for decent walks if you're staying in the area. Loch Awe Holiday Park is just a few miles away, so it works well as a half-day activity if you're basing yourself there for a few nights. Taynuilt is the nearest proper town for supplies and a decent pub meal afterwards. The whole experience leans toward adults and older teenagers rather than small children, but it's the sort of thing that sticks with you.
