Watching the massive cruise ships manoeuvre into Harwich's cruise berth is surprisingly compelling, especially when they dwarf everything around them. This working marina handles some seriously impressive vessels - we're talking floating cities that make the town's church spires look like toys.

The best viewing spots line the waterfront near Dovercourt, where you can get proper close to the action without any barriers. Kids love the sheer scale of it all, though there's not much else to keep them occupied once the initial wow factor wears off.

Timing matters here. Check the port's schedule online because there's little point turning up when it's empty - just another bit of concrete jutting into the North Sea. When the big ships are in though, it's worth the walk from the town centre.

Families staying at nearby Dovercourt Holiday Park have it made - you're close enough to wander down whenever something interesting docks. The spectacle works well as part of a longer explore of Harwich's maritime heritage, particularly if you're also hitting the Electric Palace Cinema or the lighthouse. Don't expect facilities or interpretation boards - this is purely about watching proper seafaring giants in action.
