Cullercoats Beach

You'll know Cullercoats when you see the distinctive Victorian tower standing sentinel over the rocky foreshore. It's a working lighthouse, not some heritage showpiece, and that's what gives the beach its character. The sand is proper golden here, backed by Victorian villas and the odd fish-and-chip shop, and it's one of the few Northumberland beaches where families actually want to linger rather than dash through on the way to somewhere else.

The rock pools are the real draw for kids - they're generous and teeming with starfish and anemones if you time it right around low tide. Walkers prefer the clifftop path that runs north towards Tynemouth, which offers decent views across the bay without being taxing. Adults tend to come for a coffee and a sit-down rather than a full afternoon's entertainment, and there's nothing wrong with that.

It's free to access and open year-round, though winter storms can make it moody in an almost romantic way. The beach fills up on sunny weekends, so arrive early or go on a grey Thursday if you want breathing room. Whitley Bay is right there for refreshments and supplies, making it easy to base yourself nearby. If you're staying at Old Hartley Caravan Park three miles back, Cullercoats is a natural morning detour before heading inland. The beach isn't dramatic or remote, but it's genuine and well-loved by people who actually know the Northumberland coast.
