Culloden Battlefield (National Trust for Scotland)

The 1746 battle that ended the Jacobite cause happened right here on these open moors just outside Inverness. You're standing on ground where around 1,500 men died in roughly an hour - the last pitched battle fought on British soil. That weight sits with you as you walk the field.

The National Trust for Scotland has done this properly. There's a visitor centre with exhibits that explain what actually happened, not just romantic Highlander nonsense. The audio guides help you piece together the chaos of the day. You can walk the actual battlefield itself, which is genuinely moving - the clan graves dot the heather, each stone marked with a family name.

History buffs will spend a solid two to three hours here. Families with younger kids might find the visitor centre keeps them occupied for an hour, though the battlefield walk itself can feel a bit sparse and empty depending on the weather. It's not a playground situation. The Scottish weather can be fierce out here, so pick a decent day if you can.

Free to wander the field itself, though there's a charge for the visitor centre - worth it for context. Give yourself half a day minimum if you're serious about understanding what happened.

It's an easy drive from Inverness and works well as part of a Highlands break. Ardtower Caravan Park sits just a couple of miles away, so you could easily base yourself there and explore both the battlefield and the wider Inverness area without moving camp.
