Dahlia Beach

The Thames Path brings you out here eventually, and when you stumble onto Dahlia Beach near Witney, it's instantly clear why locals keep quiet about it. This stretch of riverbank is proper tranquil - the kind of place where the water actually feels wild despite being in Oxfordshire. You get reed beds, wildflower margins, and if you're lucky, kingfishers darting through. It's a nature reserve, so the whole thing is left to do its thing without much fussing about.

Walkers absolutely get the most from this spot. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend hours here - but as part of a riverside ramble it's brilliant. The PATH is straightforward, the views across the water calm your head down, and the birdlife keeps you properly entertained. Families with young kids might find it a touch too quiet and underdeveloped (no facilities, no activities), but anyone after genuine countryside breathing room will find it rewarding.

You can visit year-round, though spring and early summer show off the wildflowers properly. It's free to access as part of the Thames Path network. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour if you're stopping to look about, longer if you're doing the bigger walk.
