Dalton Bank Nature Reserve

The walk up to Dalton Bank proper rewards you straight away - you're climbing through proper Pennine moorland just outside Holmfirth, and the views back down across the valley are genuinely striking. It's not a massive reserve, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. The paths are decent, the ground's generally firm underfoot, and on a clear day you get the sense of Yorkshire stretching out for miles.

This is walkers' territory, really. If you're after a gentle stroll with good views and the chance to spot moorland birds, you'll get two or three hours of solid walking here. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage it fine - the slopes aren't brutal, though it does climb steadily. The reserve is free to access, which is the way these things should be.

What makes it work is the mix - you get the open moorland feeling without needing full hiking gear, plus it's close enough to Holmfirth to string together with other bits of a visit. The surrounding area's got genuine character, all Pennine valleys and old stone villages. If you're staying at Holme Valley Camping and Caravan Park just down the road, this is an obvious half-day outing, especially if the weather's cooperating. Midweek mornings are best - weekends can get a bit busy with the local dog-walking crowd, which isn't terrible, just worth knowing about.
