Davange Copse

A proper woodland walk through mixed broadleaf and conifer forest, Davange Copse sits just outside Reading and makes for a solid half-day outing if you're staying in the area. The trees are mature - oak, beech, and evergreens that create decent shade even on warm days - and the paths wind through without much gradient, which counts for something when you've got kids in tow.

It's the sort of place where you'll spot birds and the occasional deer if you're quiet about it. Nothing dramatic happens here, no viewpoint at the summit or waterfall at the bottom. What you get instead is straightforward forest - air that smells like damp earth, the kind of peace that makes you remember why woods are worth visiting. Most walkers will spend 45 minutes to an hour without rushing. Families with younger children can do a shorter loop and be back for lunch without fuss.

The real value emerges when you're based at Ravenswing Park or Wellington Country Park. Both are within an easy drive, and Davange works perfectly as a morning excursion before heading back for activities elsewhere. It's not the sort of destination that warrants a special trip from far away, but if you're already in Hampshire for a park break, it's well worth the detour. Go midweek if possible - weekends can bring enough local traffic to spoil the quiet.
