Dean Street in Shildon is the home of Locomotion, the National Railway Museum's sister site, and it's genuinely worth a stop if you're into industrial heritage or railways at all. The museum occupies a sprawling former railway works and locomotive depot, so you're walking around genuine heritage railways infrastructure rather than a sterile exhibition space. You can see dozens of restored locomotives and carriages up close, many of them actually run on the heritage railway line that operates from here.

Families find it absorbing for a good three to four hours, though younger kids might flag after the first couple of hours without a cafe break (which does exist, though it's basic). History enthusiasts could easily spend longer picking through the technical details and restoration work on display. The railway enthusiasts will have the best time here, obviously, but even casual visitors find something compelling about the sheer scale and authenticity of the place.

Entry is paid, but reasonably priced, and the best time to visit is when the heritage railway is actually running services - check ahead as it doesn't operate every day. It's a proper working railway museum, not a museum pretending to be something it isn't.

Based near Shildon, you're well-positioned for the surrounding caravan and glamping parks like Eden Grange or High Farm Holiday Park. It's a solid rainy-day alternative or a genuine draw if railways are your thing, rather than a squeeze-it-in attraction.
