De'ils Back Door

The Devil's Back Door - aye, that's really what it's called - is a narrow geological fault that cuts through the hillside near Sanquhar like something carved by an axe. You squeeze through this vertical cleft in the rock, barely wide enough for most adults without turning sideways, and emerge on the other side feeling properly small. It's the kind of spot that makes you understand why old folk invented dark stories about it.

What you're actually looking at is a sandstone split, formed over millions of years, but standing at the entrance it feels like geology trying to tell you something sinister.
