Dering Woods

Dering Woods sits just outside Ashford, a proper stretch of ancient woodland that feels worlds away from the town itself. Walking through here, you're under a proper old canopy of beech and oak, the kind of trees that have stood for centuries. It's the sort of place where you actually notice the quiet.

The woods are free to explore and there are decent footpaths threading through, so you can spend anywhere from an hour to half a day here depending on your mood. Walkers will appreciate the terrain - it's not flat, but it's nothing brutal either. Families with kids will find enough space to let them burn energy without worrying about traffic, though it's not a playground replacement. History types might get a kick out of knowing they're walking through woodland that's been here since medieval times, though there aren't loads of obvious historical markers.

Timing-wise, spring is when it properly comes alive with bluebells and the works. Summer's lovely if you want shelter from sun, though it gets muggy. Autumn turns it golden. Winter's muddy but atmospheric if you don't mind damp feet.

If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Go Glamp or Wildside are closest, about 2-4 miles out - it's an easy walk or short drive to get here. Not a day-tripper destination on its own, but absolutely worth incorporating into a longer woodland ramble through the area. Pairs well with exploring what else Kent's got on offer.
