Devichoys Wood Nature Reserve

Ancient woodland carpets this Wildlife Trust reserve just outside Truro, where oak and hazel trees create a proper canopy that blocks out most of the sky. Bluebells flood the forest floor in spring - one of those moments that makes Cornwall feel genuinely magical rather than just another seaside county.

Walking here feels like stepping back centuries. The paths wind through what's essentially unchanged medieval woodland, complete with old coppice stools that tell stories of traditional forest management. Bird watchers do well here - woodpeckers drum away in the canopy while smaller songbirds flit through the understory.

It's not a big reserve, so don't expect an all-day adventure. An hour or two covers the main trails comfortably, making it perfect for families staying at nearby Carnon Downs or Trethem Mill who want a gentle woodland walk without driving across the county. Young children might find it a bit samey after the initial excitement wears off.

Best visited in late April or May when the bluebells are properly out - the rest of the year it's pleasant enough but lacks that wow factor. The reserve sits conveniently close to Truro if you're combining it with town shopping or cathedral visits. Free parking and no entry fees make it an easy addition to any Cornwall itinerary focused around the county's quieter, greener side.
