Dinefwr Castle

The castle itself sits high above the Towy Valley, and the walk up gets your heart pumping before you even reach the gatehouse. Dinefwr is what remains of a medieval stronghold that once ruled this corner of Carmarthenshire - all crumbling stone walls, grassy ramparts, and views that stretch for miles across the valley floor.

You're essentially wandering through the bones of a 12th-century fortress. The keep still stands, though it's more skeleton than structure these days, and the outer defences give you a proper sense of how seriously they took their defence back then. It's the kind of place where you can see the layout in your head - where the kitchens would have been, where the lord would have surveyed his lands.

Historically-minded visitors and walkers will get the most from Dinefwr. It's not one for those after a quick snap and move on. The location itself matters more than what's left of the building - the strategic positioning alone tells you everything about medieval power. Best visited on a clear day when that valley view actually lives up to the hype.

Llandeilo is just down the road, making Dinefwr an easy addition to a wider Carmarthenshire trip. The nearby glamping sites - Ravenscroft Retreats is barely a mile away - work well as bases. Set aside a couple of hours including the walk, and wear proper boots if it's been wet. The climb is steep enough without slipping.
