Dingwall Castle Doocot

A squat stone tower standing alone in Dingwall - that's what you'll find when you locate the castle doocot. It's one of those Scottish structures that doesn't announce itself, but once you know what you're looking at, it becomes rather compelling. A doocot (or dovecot) was essentially a medieval apartment block for pigeons, built to supply meat and eggs to the castle. This one's a proper relic, and the sheer fact it's still standing tells you something about the craftsmanship.

The tower itself is small - you're not wandering round for hours. This is a quick stop, the sort of thing history buffs will find genuinely interesting while others might spend ten minutes taking photos and moving on. The location near Dingwall town centre makes it painless to reach if you're based at the Dingwall Camping and Caravanning Club Site, literally a stone's throw away. If you're staying further afield at Highland Heights Luxury Glamping or Blackrock Caravan Park, it's a reasonable drive for the sake of seeing something authentically old and unapologetically unglamorous.

Free to look at from the outside, naturally. No opening hours to worry about - it's just there. Best visited on a dry day because the ground around it can get boggy. It works well as part of a wider Highlands tour rather than a destination in itself, but if you're keen on Scottish medieval architecture or want a genuine historical moment rather than another visitor-centre experience, it's well worth the detour.
