Dira Wood

The woodland around Dira Wood, just outside Crediton, is the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a proper explore. Ancient beech and oak tower overhead, dappled light filters through in that particular way that makes you want to slow down and actually look at things rather than rush through.

It's genuinely decent for walkers - the paths wind through without being relentlessly steep, and there's enough variation in terrain to keep it interesting for a couple of hours. Kids tend to enjoy it too; there's space to move about, the occasional stream to peer into, and that foresty appeal that holds attention longer than you'd expect. The autumn colours here are properly impressive if you time it right.

What you're getting is straightforward woodland walking rather than facilities or attractions. No visitor centre, no car park amenities that I'm aware of - just trees, paths, and the sort of quiet you don't often find within striking distance of a town. That's either exactly what you're after or it isn't.

If you're based at Yeatheridge Farm Caravan Park six miles away, this makes an easy morning or afternoon outing to break up the holiday without burning petrol. The woodland does its job well - it's not trying to be anything other than a wood. Sometimes that's refreshing.
