Disused Quarry

The old quarry near Ellon has flooded into something genuinely unexpected - a proper little lake surrounded by sheer rock faces that look far more dramatic than you'd anticipate in Aberdeenshire. The water's surprisingly clear on a decent day, and the whole thing feels oddly remote despite being minutes from town.

It's the kind of place that appeals most to photographers and geology types rather than families hoping for a swim. The rock walls are the real draw - they're sizeable enough to make you wonder what the original excavation actually produced. Walking around the rim takes about twenty minutes if you're not bothering with the scrambles down, though the banks get muddy, so decent boots are essential.

We didn't find any official opening hours or admission fees - it appears to be accessible, though there's no formal infrastructure. The Ythan Valley Campsite is barely a mile away, making this a decent morning walk if you're based there. It's best visited when the light's good, which in Scotland means planning around the seasons. Winter's dramatic but grim. Spring and early summer work best.

Worth the detour? If you're already in the Ellon area and enjoy industrial archaeology or just unusual landscapes, absolutely. Don't make a special trip from Aberdeen for it alone. The quarry's interesting precisely because it's not polished or promoted - it feels like you've stumbled on something real rather than visited an attraction.
