Doddershall Wood

Walk into Doddershall Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper mature woodland - the sort of place where the light filters through in that greenish-gold way that makes you forget you're only a few miles from Buckingham town centre. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss, and there's a genuine sense of having stepped away from things.

It's not a grand or manicured sort of woodland. There are no visitor facilities to speak of, no branded trails or interpretation boards, just you and the trees. That's partly what makes it worthwhile if you're after a straightforward woodland walk without the crowds. Families with young kids will find it manageable - the paths are generally easy underfoot, though muddy after rain - and there's enough space to let them explore without worrying they'll disturb some precious ecosystem.

History types might get something from the ancient woodland designation, though you won't find much explanation on the ground. For walkers, it's a solid spot to loop through for an hour or so, especially combined with exploring the wider Buckinghamshire countryside.
