Dodnash Wood

A proper Essex woodland that actually rewards a visit, Dodnash Wood sits just outside Ipswich and delivers what you'd hope for - tall trees, a bit of peace, and enough space to actually lose the crowds. Walking through here feels like stepping back from the bustle of town within minutes. The woodland floor is good for wandering, with established paths that don't require serious hiking boots, though it can get muddy after rain.

It's brilliant for families with kids aged six and up who can manage an hour or two on their feet without complaining. Dog walkers absolutely love it. History types will find it less demanding than a castle visit but still atmospheric. You won't find any facilities or marked trails here, so bring a map or use your phone's GPS - the wood itself is straightforward enough, but it's easy to lose track of which direction you came from.
