Doggy Playground

Your dog's probably been stuck in the car for hours by the time you reach Hemel Hempstead, and the Doggy Playground is exactly what you both need to burn some energy. It's a dedicated off-lead space where your dog can properly run around without worrying about traffic or other hazards - no pretence, just an open area designed for dogs to be dogs.

The setup is straightforward: fenced grounds where your pooch can chase, sniff, and socialise with other dogs while you watch from the sidelines. It won't keep an adult entertained for hours, but as a pit stop between pitch and pub, it's brilliant. Kids quite enjoy the novelty of watching dogs go mental too, though it's not a playground for children in any conventional sense.

Bring water and maybe a ball or toy - whatever gets your dog's tail wagging. Aim for quieter times in the week if your dog's the nervous type; weekends can get busy. It's the sort of spot you'll genuinely thank yourself for finding when your spaniel's finally stopped barking in your ear about wanting a proper run.

If you're staying at Fuzzy's Farm or Whelpley Hill Park (both within walking distance), this saves you the drive into town. It's handy enough for a twenty-minute detour, not worth planning a trip around, but if you've got dogs in the caravan, it's proper useful.
