Walking into Domewood feels like stepping through a door into somewhere properly wild. This Sussex forest sits just outside Lingfield and delivers the sort of dense, undisturbed woodland that's increasingly rare in the South East - tall pines mixed with broadleaves, quiet paths, and genuine peace.

It's not a manicured nature reserve with marked trails and information boards. Instead, you get forest as it actually is: rooty underfoot, dappled light through the canopy, the occasional muddy patch that catches you out. Walkers will love it, especially those who prefer their woodland without the visitor centre commentary. Families with older kids who enjoy exploring will find plenty to occupy them for an afternoon, though there's nothing specifically laid on to amuse the under-eights.

You can easily spend two hours here without rushing, following whatever paths appeal. The forest has genuine character - it feels like a place with history rather than a manufactured outdoor experience. Bring proper boots; it can be boggy even days after rain.
