Dornoch Distillery

The first thing you notice walking into Dornoch Distillery is the smell - that sharp, warm tang of spirit and oak that hits you before you've even stepped through the door. This is proper whisky country in the far north of the Highlands, and the distillery itself is right on Dornoch's doorstep, making it a natural stop if you're based at any of the local caravan parks.

The distillery produces single malt in small batches, and you can watch the whole operation if you time it right - copper stills gleaming, the works. Tours take you through the production process, though honestly, the best bit is the tasting room afterwards. They're generous with pours, and the spirit is genuinely excellent without the marketing nonsense you get from the bigger names down south.

Allow a couple of hours if you're doing a full tour and tasting. It's not a vast operation, so you won't spend half your day here, but it's time well spent. Families with young kids will find it dull - there's nothing interactive for them - but serious drinkers and whisky enthusiasts will absolutely get something from it.

Dornoch itself is lovely and walkable, so staying at Dornoch Caravan & Camping Park puts you right there. Pop the distillery visit into a morning, grab lunch in town, then head to one of the nearby parks for the afternoon if you're doing a longer Highland trip. Worth the detour if you've got any interest in whisky at all.
