Dornoch Firth Viewpoint

Pull off the A9 just north of Ardgay and you'll find yourself at a viewing platform that delivers far more drama than its modest lay-by suggests. The Dornoch Firth spreads out below in a proper wide estuary - all mudflats and water channels that shift colour depending on the light and tide. On a clear day, the view across to the far shore is genuinely striking, with the land rising gradually into distant hills.

It's the kind of spot that rewards a ten-minute stop rather than a destination in itself. Walkers heading through the Highlands use it as a breather point; photographers come for the light hitting the water at late afternoon. Families won't complain - it's safe, there's a fence, and kids can spot waders and the occasional seal if you're lucky. The firth itself is a serious place - tidal, moody, nothing manicured about it.

There's no visitor centre or café, which is fine. Free to access, takes five minutes to park and absorb the view. The real pull is how it sits as a natural break on a longer Highland drive - far better than staring at the road for another stretch. If you're staying at Ardgay Glamping just three miles south, it's an obvious morning walk or end-of-day detour. The viewpoint won't keep you long, but it's the kind of unembellished Scottish landscape moment that justifies a Highland trip in the first place.
