Down Law

Rising to 315 metres above the Howe of Fife, this modest summit delivers views that punch well above its weight. Down Law sits between Cupar and the coast, offering a proper workout without the commitment of a full mountain day. The path winds through farmland before climbing steadily through patches of woodland to reach the triangulation point at the top.

Families with older children will find this a manageable challenge - reckon on two hours return from the car park near Cults. The reward comes in the form of sweeping views across central Fife, with the Lomond Hills visible on clear days and glimpses of the Forth beyond. It's not dramatic in the Highland sense, but there's something satisfying about earning your panorama.

Walkers staying at nearby parks like Balbirnie Park or Wigwam Holidays Montrave Estate will find this makes for a decent morning's exercise. The hill sees fewer visitors than the better-known Lomond Hills, so you'll likely have the summit to yourself. Best tackled in dry conditions as the final approach can get muddy after rain. Pack a flask - the wind picks up at the top and there's nowhere to shelter.
