Down Tor Stone Circle

You're standing on open moorland with the wind picking up, roughly four miles outside Plymouth, staring at a ring of weathered granite stones that's been here for around four thousand years. Down Tor Stone Circle isn't flashy - there's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards telling you what to think. Just eight or nine stones, depending on how you count the fallen ones, arranged in a rough circle on the high ground.

It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of effort to find. There's no charge, no opening hours to worry about - you turn up when it suits you. The walk from the car park takes twenty minutes or so across actual moorland, which means proper terrain underfoot and weather that can turn on you. In spring or early autumn, it's lovely. In winter, it gets properly boggy.

History types will spend thirty minutes here thinking about Bronze Age communities and what rituals might have happened in this exact spot. Families with young kids often find it underwhelming - there's not much to do beyond look at rocks and take photographs. Walkers, though, tend to pair this with other tor climbs across the moor.

If you're staying at Langstone Manor Holiday Park or the Glamping Pods nearby, it's worth the detour as part of a wider Dartmoor exploration. Don't make it your sole reason for a trip out from Plymouth, but if you're in the area already, the walk itself across open moorland is the real draw.
