Downhill Meadow

The name alone tells you what to expect - a sloping field that drops toward the Cornish coast near Newquay. It's the sort of place locals know and visitors often walk straight past, which is precisely why it's worth stopping for.

Downhill Meadow is essentially a coastal grassland with decent views out toward the Atlantic. There's no charge, no facilities, no visitor centre trying to sell you a guidebook. You arrive, you walk, you either think it's lovely or you don't. The slope itself is genuinely steep in places - proper hard work if you're pushing a buggy, but decent exercise if you're after a brisk walk.

It works best for people who like unspoilt coastal walks without the crowds. If you're staying at Watergate Bay Touring Park - just 2.5 miles away - it's an easy morning jaunt. Ditto if you're based near Newquay's beach caravan parks. The meadow gives you that raw, windswept Cornish feeling without having to join the queue at somewhere more famous.

Would you drive 20 minutes out of your way specifically to see it? Probably not. But if you're already in the area with half an hour to spare, it beats sitting in a cafe in Newquay. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're walking it properly, longer if you stop to look at the view. Spring and early summer are best - the grass is vivid, the wind isn't trying to knock you over, and you'll likely have the place to yourself.
