Doxey Marshes

The marshes sprawl across the countryside just outside Stafford, and they're genuinely worth the drive if you're serious about birdwatching or simply fancy a proper walk through wetland. You get reed beds, open water, and the chance to spot everything from lapwings to lesser spotted woodpeckers depending on the season - winter brings the big numbers, though spring migration can be quite something too.

It's not a manicured visitor attraction with a cafe and gift shop. This is the real deal - bring binoculars, sensible boots, and patience. The network of paths lets you get out into the habitat without trampling the nesting areas, and locals tend to be knowledgeable and chatty if you bump into them. Allow a couple of hours minimum; many people lose half a day here once they get going.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit slow unless the children are already keen on nature. Serious walkers and wildlife enthusiasts absolutely belong here. It's free to access, which is brilliant.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Ladybirch Motorhome Park is barely two miles away - you could easily make this a morning or afternoon expedition without any faffing about. Pair it with a wander around Stafford itself or a canalside walk if the weather turns, but come here for the birds and the birdwatchers. It's unglamorous and brilliant.
