Dr Beynon's Bug Farm

You're standing in front of giant stick insects and listening to a bloke explain why tarantulas aren't actually out to get you. That's Dr Beynon's Bug Farm near St Davids, and it's either brilliant or deeply unsettling depending on your feelings about eight-legged creatures.

This is a proper hands-on affair. You'll see everything from creepy-crawlies in glass cases to live demonstrations where Dr Beynon himself - yes, there really is a Dr Beynon - shows you actual scorpions and spiders up close. Kids either love it or spend the whole time clinging to a parent's leg. There's no middle ground.

The farm works well as a rainy-day stop when you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Pembrokeshire Meadows is closest at under two miles away. You won't need more than an hour here unless your kids are genuinely obsessed with insects, though the gift shop can stretch things out a bit. It's the kind of place that breaks up a holiday nicely rather than being a full afternoon.

Admission costs money, and honestly, it's quite specific - you either want to see exotic bugs or you don't. There's limited appeal if you're squeamish. But if you've got children who are into nature and wildlife, it beats another trip to a beach on a grey day. Book ahead during peak season, as it can get properly rammed with school groups.
