Drax Skylark Centre

The Drax Skylark Centre sits on the edge of Goole, a proper industrial landmark that most people drive straight past without a second glance. It's the visitor centre for Drax Power Station - one of Europe's largest power stations - and if you've got any curiosity about how Britain actually generates electricity, it's worth an hour of your time.

What you're really coming for is the viewing gallery that looks out over the massive cooling towers and generating units. On a clear day, the sheer scale of the place is genuinely impressive - those iconic towers dominate the skyline for miles around. They've done the visitor experience well enough: there's information about renewable energy, how the station works, and what the future holds for a facility that's been converting coal to power since the 1970s. It's not flashy, but it's honest.

Families with kids interested in engineering or science will get something out of it. Anyone planning a caravan stay at Apple Blossom, just three miles away, could easily slot this in on a rainy afternoon. Realistically though, an hour covers it - you're not spending a full day here.

The centre itself is free to access, though do check opening hours before you visit as they're not always predictable. If industrial heritage speaks to you, or you simply want to understand the landscape around the Humber estuary a bit better, it's fine. Just don't expect thrills.
