Draycote Water

Three miles south of Rugby lies a proper working reservoir that's quietly become one of the Midlands' best spots for getting outdoors without the crowds. Draycote Water stretches across 610 acres, and once you're standing at the water's edge on a clear day, you forget you're this close to a town at all.

The main draw is the walking and cycling - there's a decent loop around the perimeter if you fancy a gentle three-mile amble, or you can do sections depending on energy levels. Anglers come here seriously, and you'll often see them lined up along the banks from dawn onwards. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars; the lake attracts all sorts depending on season, from common woodland species to the occasional rarer visitor that gets the twitchers excited.

Water sports happen here too - sailing and windsurfing are permitted on certain sections, though you'll need to check current regulations before arriving. The visitor centre, when staffed, has the full details.

Families with younger kids might find a full day a bit much unless they're keen walkers, but an hour or two pottering about the visitor area and grabbing a quick walk works fine. It's free to access, which is the beauty of it. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby touring parks - Eriba Glade or Lairhillock are both within spitting distance - this makes for a proper restful morning without needing to venture far. On weekends it gets busier, so aim for a weekday if possible.
