Dromara Destroyers

A scrap of land near Hillsborough holds the story of the Dromara Destroyers - a flying unit that left its mark on World War II. There's not much to see on the ground itself, but that's rather the point. This is where history happened, quietly and without fanfare, and sometimes that matters more than a visitor centre with gift shop.

The Destroyers were an aircraft squadron based here during the war, and walking the site gives you a sense of what it meant to operate a working airfield in wartime Northern Ireland - the dispersed hardstandings, the sense of space needed for operations, the isolation. It's the kind of place that rewards a bit of imagination and knowledge before you arrive. Worth reading up on beforehand, or this becomes a five-minute stop.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from it, particularly those with family connections to the RAF or the war years. Children might struggle without context - it's not a reconstructed experience, just the bones of what was. Allow maybe twenty minutes unless you're really keen to photograph and research.

Stay at Slieve Croob Camping, just three and a half miles away - that five-star rating is earned, and it puts you within striking distance of Lisburn's better attractions as well. Lakeside View is closer at two and a bit miles if you prefer static caravan comfort. Hillsborough itself is handy for lunch or supplies after your visit.
