Dufftown Glassworks

The old glassworks at Dufftown is one of those industrial relics that stops you mid-walk. Sitting on the outskirts near Keith, it's a proper snapshot of Scottish manufacturing from a different era - the kind of place where you can almost hear the furnaces roaring if you squint hard enough.

What remains is largely the skeletal structure: brick kilns, stonework foundations, and scattered machinery parts that tell the story of glass production that once kept this corner of Aberdeenshire ticking. It's not flashy or particularly restored, which is precisely why it works. You're looking at genuine industrial archaeology, not a theme park version of it.

Historians and industrial heritage buffs will get the most from a visit here. Walkers doing a loop through the area might add it as a quick detour - allow twenty minutes or so, though you could spend longer photographing the textures if you're that way inclined. Families with very young kids might find it a bit static; teenagers interested in industrial design or Scottish manufacturing history will engage more seriously.

It's free to wander round, though there's no official visitor facility or interpretation boards that I could find. Best to go when you've got decent light for photographs and the ground isn't sodden. Pair it with a stay at Hillside Havens just down the road - that five-star park gives you a comfortable base for exploring this less-trampled corner of the Highlands without having to drive far.
