Dungeness Nature Reserve

Dungeness is genuinely otherworldly - a vast shingle beach that stretches for miles along the Kent coast, backed by one of England's most important nature reserves. There's no soft sand here, just thousands of smooth pebbles that crunch underfoot, and the landscape feels almost lunar in its bleakness. The reserve itself is a haven for birdwatchers and botanists. You'll spot rare plants that thrive nowhere else in Britain, adapted to the harsh shingle conditions, and during migration seasons the birdlife is extraordinary - warblers, terns, and plovers among them.

What makes it special is the contrast with the rest of the Kent coast. While other beaches fill up with families, Dungeness remains refreshingly wild. The old nuclear power station looms in the distance (unsettling for some, oddly compelling for others), and there's a working lighthouse at Dungeness Point if you fancy the walk. You can wander the reserve freely - it's mostly free access, though some areas require permits for serious birders. Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're into wildlife. The shingle can be punishing on the feet, so decent walking boots matter.

Nearest proper town is Herons, though it's a modest place. If you're based at Herons Park Campsite or any of the holiday parks scattered around New Romney and Camber, Dungeness makes a brilliant half-day excursion. It won't suit everyone - families with small children might find it bleak and the walking tedious - but for anyone seeking something properly different from the typical seaside, it absolutely delivers.
