Dunnet Beach

The northernmost mainland beach in Britain sits just outside Thurso, and it's properly wild. Dunnet Beach stretches for miles - golden sand backed by dunes and that particular Scottish light that makes everything look sharper, colder, more real than it has any right to. You'll see surfers here on decent swells, families hunting for shells on calmer days, and photographers waiting for the light to hit the cliffs just so.

What strikes you first is how exposed it feels. There's no promenade, no ice cream van, no crowds. Just beach, sky, and the kind of wind that reminds you why the Highlands don't do cosy. The walk from the car park takes ten minutes across open ground - bring layers, always. Walkers will love the dune system and the fact you can disappear for hours without seeing another soul. Families with older kids do fine here; younger ones might find it a bit bleak unless they're into proper seaside exploring. Photographers will be back every evening chasing the light.

There's nothing to pay and nowhere official to "visit" - you just turn up. Allow an hour minimum, longer if you're the type to sit and stare. The beach handles all tides reasonably well, though low tide gives you more space to roam. It's genuinely one of Scotland's best-kept stretches of sand, though "best" here means dramatic and demanding rather than sheltered. Little Croft Highlands sits four miles south if you're based locally - combines nicely with a Thurso visit.
