Dunnet Head Lighthouse

The drive to Dunnet Head feels properly remote - you're at the northernmost point of mainland Britain, watching the landscape flatten and the sky expand until there's nothing but wind and light. The lighthouse sits on the cliff edge, white and resolute against whatever weather the Atlantic's throwing at it that day.

You get a real sense of scale up here. The Pentland Firth churns below, and on a clear day you can see across to Orkney. The walk out to the lighthouse itself takes about twenty minutes from the car park - straightforward path, nothing technical, but the wind can be bracing. Once you're there, it's the kind of view that explains why Victorian engineers bothered building anything this far north.

Practically speaking, it's free to visit and there's no set opening hours - you just rock up. Allow a good hour if you want to walk around the headland properly and grab some photos. The light show at dawn or sunset is genuinely worth planning for if you're in the area. Families with older kids will get more out of it than toddlers; the cliffs are high and the exposure real, so you need everyone paying attention.
