Dunsdon National Nature Reserve

The cliffs around Dunsdon feel properly wild. This nature reserve sits on the North Cornwall coast near Bude, where the landscape drops away sharply and the wind doesn't hold back. You're walking along exposed grassland with the sea hammering below - it's dramatic without being twee.

What you get here is serious birdwatching territory. The reserve protects breeding seabirds and the clifftop habitat they rely on, so binoculars are essential if you're into that sort of thing. In spring and summer, you'll spot razorbills, guillemots, and kittiwakes nesting on the rock faces. Even without a field guide, the sheer number of birds going in and out is striking. The walk itself isn't long - most people cover the main paths in an hour or so - but it's the kind of place where you'll stop frequently just to stare out at the water.

It's free, which is handy. The real draw is the solitude. You won't find crowds here like you might at better-known Cornish beauty spots. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might get restless since there's not much to actually do beyond walking and looking. Best time is late spring when the birds are active and the weather's cooperating.

Stay at Wooda Farm or Atlantic Horizons nearby - both are solid bases for exploring this stretch of coast. The reserve works well as part of a longer clifftop walk rather than a destination in itself, but it's worth the detour if you're in Bude anyway.
